    Scale Down Challenge

I was the developer and designer for the web app portion of Scale Down Challenge. Scale Down Challenge is a project by HOLY (a Dutch non-profit) that was developed to to teach kids about sustainable consumption. 30 playful challenges invite children, to rethink and react on our consumption habits. The projects starting point was a five foot traveling grocery scale, which kids used to pick their challenges, they are given a receipt with a code which gives them the tools to engage with the online presence of the scale and participate in the growing community.

    Post Space

Is New Space, or the commercialization of space the best we can do. As it stands now does it deserve the "New" or is it "Post Space", like postmodernism simply the post acting as a signifier of a departure from. Have we accepted space or can this new push into space be more. Can we embrace the openness of space and offer opportunities to more than the world's billionaire and wealthiest nations. Can new space become a platform for cultural, social and scientific advancement in the way that the internet has been in the last two decades. We are at a turning point where we can define who owns space and what it means to us again.

In this project potential "New Space" space entities were created through the design of "speculative swag". Swag acting as an artefact of the future that literally grounds space programs long after they have been lost to the ether of space.

    Co-presence Network

    Brief

Create a proactive system that addresses disabilities while also exploring boundaries, seams and superpowers. With this project, we approached the idea of disabilities in the situational sense, like how multi-tasking can increase the burden of cognitive load, or occupied hands are incapable of doing other things.

    Speculating Vertical Parametric Cities

Speculating Vertical Parametric Cities responds to overpopulation by suggesting the adaptation of cities to mixed-use highly efficient vertically stacked buildings created using 3D bin-packing algorithms. A series of coarse simulations done in Unity 3D visualize bizarre alternatives offering an adversarial alternative to current parametric/algorithmic formal practices used in architecture and urban planning.

    study: self-driving car

We directed a movement study which explores the user experience of the self-driving vehicle of the future. Seeking freedom to question, we eliminated the physical car. This process allowed us to avoid familiar tropes associated with current technology and focus on the human relationship with the self driving car.

    Color and Light

We rarely take notice of the street lamps that light our way as we traverse the vast networks of streets, highways and freeways that make up Los Angeles and at the moment this staple of modern infrastructure is undergoing a drastic transition. The city is shifting from the warm glow of sodium-vapor lights to the stark white LED. On face value the change is innocuous, the city stands to save money both on energy and cost of maintenance.

The change to LED has implications that reach beyond the domain of public infrastructure. One such implication is the new lighting's impact on film. LA is arguably one of the most filmed cities in the world, this transition will stand as a marker in time in film and television. The feel of "night in the city" will never be the same.

Using this as our starting point, we set out to document a space entirely through the color temperature of light. While at the same time to understand some of the implications that the color of light can have on infrastructure, public space and film.

  • Color and Light: Drives

To further illustrate our idea we tried to combine our data with a stop motion film of Wilshire, however this mode of exploration proved to have limited impact on the project. Altering the exposure on a camera turned out to be a convincing way to visualize street light without any of the surrounding infrastructure. The resulting video didn't meet our expectations and proved difficult to map data to (we ultimately decided to drop the idea altogether).

  • Color and Light: Film and Hue

While the data driven investigation was in progress Elaine started an investigation into the color of films in Los Angeles.

  • Color and Light: Mapping Device

The instrument stores gps coordinates, time and color data on a micro-sd card. 4 neodymium magnets at the base can attach it to the roof of a car.
